Act it Out

The quote, as many do, caught me in its web. I am almost always awed by an authors ability to string together a short series of words into something poetic, lyrical and inspirational. Without sounding trite, sophomoric or simplistic as caveats. Most of them I have been finding in books or compliments of the thousands of well-meaning posters of FB memes. This one, in a hard-to-miss size and using one of my personal favorite fonts, the husky Impact, spoke to me in a loud a clear baritone:

LIVE THE REALITY YOU WISH TO EXPERIENCE.

So good. I borrowed it this morning in class to illustrate the eternal availability of what we envision. If, as we all like to say, we are doing our best, getting by or living the dream, the quality of our experience, from the moment we hit the floor to the second we can do no more, is a series of options led through production and into execution by our awareness. We all have the power to change whatever is currently in front of our eyeballs by simply wishing or wanting something better. Another way to state this is to agree with our inner selves, that naysayer we talk to, literally, a thousand times per hour, into looking at the current situation, the ever-present here and now, in a different light. All good actors know this. Politicians have perfected the use of the flip-flop, changing gears, tone, volume or policy as the situation demands, into a fine art. To the athlete, there are performance weakness that match against those of the opposition in a real-time contest of give and take, are my strengths better than yours? Are my weakness camouflaged enough to trick you into errors and eventual defeat? Is my offense better than your defense? Fastball or change-up? Could it truly be, as suggested, that it IS all attitude? Heck, even in the banal world of big business where there is really only one goal, we often hear counsel to ‘fake it until you make it.’

If that is your only course of action, then by all means have at it but please remember that the goal here is to, eventually, make it. If one puts everything into the process of becoming something better, more aware, more skilled, with a deeper and wider scope of talents, that is not faking at all - that is growth. Something we should all aspire towards.

Rather than default to the mundane, dummy-down into the cult of ignorance, let’s keep our sights on the path to excellence. The hard work which of course begins when we start the conversion of all those negative thoughts into positive ones. A powerful transcendence will add the requisite meaning and momentum to every step along that mystical road. This road. This day. This miracle. This magic.

If you are reading this you have the chance right now. Live the reality you wish to experience.

Act it out.
