76.
TOM is on screen. I formally introduce Maria Satriano, the former Violet Hayes, to him and he to her. They exchange rather awkward pleasantries, understandable because this is an altogether unorthodox and unique circumstance for each of them. One does not usually waltz in on an elite organization without the usual prerequisites. TOM seems sympathetic despite the uncharted waters we are sailing. Maria appears to be assuming the position of the star athlete doing a post-game interview after a particularly impressive performance. In this improv scenario I have become the host facilitating the exchange.
TOM: “We will take as long as necessary to allow the dust to settle before making any covert moves, this to allow an appropriate response from several agencies whom we are monitoring closely. You are going to the satellite communications center in Colorado for two weeks of intense training, we need to get Ms Satriano up to speed and prepared for infiltration. Chatter is light from The Axis right now, which could be good news or bad. I will provide a full brief on the status of our detainees tomorrow. As well as the interim deployment plan involving your crew.”
ME: “Anything further from Bakersfield ground zero?”
TOM: “The warden, whose truck you demolished, was a little peeved, but once Donaldson explained the bigger picture, the redacted parts, he softened his stance and called off the dogs. The story is dying from lack of news and updates, and the APB has been suspended. Your guy at the Motel seems to be satisfied with the lawyer we provided and sack of unmarked bills we delivered. Donaldson wondered why you used such a large charge of PE on the second truck, but I am sure you had your reasons. All the guards have recovered and have provided debriefing affirmation on the hostage play. Looks at this point as if your mission was a complete success. Both of you will be debriefed tomorrow as soon as you have rested.”
ME: “You mention that the crew is being deployed?”
TOM: “They are waiting for you in Colorado as we speak.”
ME: “Outstanding.”
Maria looks at me with an expression that suggests she is impressed with her new employers and eager to get started on this grand adventure. Catching this, I ask her if she has any questions for TOM.
MARIA: “Am I getting paid for all this?”
It is the first time I have ever seen TOM even the slightest bit flustered. He hesitates, purses his lips and after a noticeable pause;
TOM: “We’ll see how you handle the next two weeks, call it an audition.”
The big screen goes blank and I turn to smile at Maria with what I hope she takes as a forbidding, yet welcoming grin.
