College Football

You may ask, or not, what my attraction to college football is. I will make the attempt (from the right hash) in bullet point form to put the ball through the uprights.

  • Energy. Takes me to a place where it once flourished.
  • Atmosphere. There is nothing like it (especially at Husky Stadium) on game day.
  • Chance. These are kids prone to making mistakes, they that err less usually win.
  • Emotion. The pros do it for a (albeit large) payday. Kids just do it.
  • Growth. Watching the transformation from frosh to senior is most satisfying.
  • Swagger. When all the practice is done, you gotta let it go and let it flow.
  • Certainty. There exists none, anything can happen.
  • Fall. Fall without CF would be like a day without water.
  • Teamwork. When it gels nothing is sweeter.
  • Mentoring. Chain of command.
  • Lessons. Next man up and never give up.
  • Defeat. Dealing with it promotes growth.
  • Victory. Expect to win, do what is necessary to achieve team goals.
  • Injury. Learn to tell when.
  • Selfishness. Sell the farm for your mates.
  • Patience. Wait until the opportunity presents.
  • Intervals. Go and go hard, rest, recover repeat.
  • Endurance. Last man standing.
  • Fearlessness. Be brave in battle.
  • Communication. Audible, correct the course.
  • Humanity. Play hard and expect same from opponent.
  • Strategy. Discipline and then surprise.
  • Morality. Play fair.
  • Honor. Be true to your school.
  • Dedication. This is what we do.
  • Tradition. This is who we are.
  • Devotion. This is who we will become.
  • Execution. Practice, practice, practice.
  • Sportsmanship. Nice game.
  • Experience. On your resume forevermore.
  • Cheerleaders.

I woke this morning to learn that our All-American left guard will not play today. I am trusting the kids to recognize that their attitudes towards this game is unchangeable as another athlete with the same commitment replaces him. There is a job to do. All the practice and preparation is now behind. All we can do is go out and play the game with relaxed focus and flow.
